Gartner has renamed its long-running sales technology grid, and the change is good news for anyone choosing a CRM this year. In August 2026 the Magic Quadrant for Sales Force Automation Platforms became the Magic Quadrant for CRM Sales Platforms, the first edition under the new label. The reshuffle underneath that name handed B2B buyers a wider set of credible options than the category has offered in some time.
Thirteen vendors were assessed. Salesforce and Microsoft hold the Leaders quadrant, Salesforce for a twentieth consecutive year and Microsoft for a sixteenth. The movement everywhere else is what makes this edition worth an hour of a buying committee’s attention. HubSpot climbed two positions, from Niche Player to Challenger. Zoho moved up from Visionary to Challenger. Oracle stepped across from Leader to Challenger, SAP from Challenger to Niche Player, and Creatio now sits alone as the only Visionary on the grid. Pega joins the Challengers, with BUSINESSNEXT, Neocrm, monday.com, Vtiger and SugarAI filling out the Niche Players.
What changed in Gartner’s 2026 CRM Magic Quadrant?
The 2026 Magic Quadrant for CRM Sales Platforms replaces the Sales Force Automation Platforms report that Gartner last published in 2025. The rename is not cosmetic. Gartner now defines the category as AI-driven systems that orchestrate end-to-end sales workflows, while still carrying the familiar foundations of account and contact management, opportunity orchestration and pipeline forecasting. Thirteen vendors were evaluated. Salesforce and Microsoft are the two Leaders. HubSpot, Zoho, Oracle and Pega are Challengers, Creatio is the sole Visionary, and six vendors including SAP sit as Niche Players. The scoring now rewards how well predictive, generative and agentic AI are embedded in the selling workflow, and how much governance and observability come with them.
For buyers, the practical effect is that the grid has stopped grading vendors on how completely they automate a sales process and started grading them on how well they run one with AI in the loop. That is a much closer match to what most revenue teams are actually trying to buy in 2026, which makes this year’s placements more useful as an input to a shortlist than last year’s were.
What is a CRM sales platform?
A CRM sales platform is the system of record for accounts, contacts, opportunities and pipeline, extended with predictive, generative and agentic AI that can carry out steps in the selling process rather than only reporting on them. Gartner’s 2026 definition sets the bar at end-to-end workflow orchestration: the platform should be able to research an account, prepare a meeting, update a record, progress a deal and forecast the outcome, with human oversight designed in. The difference from classic sales force automation is that the older category assumed a person performed each step and the software recorded it. A CRM sales platform assumes some steps are performed by the software, which is why governance and observability moved into the scoring.
This matters more than a naming convention usually would, because it changes what a proof of concept should look for. A demonstration that shows clean data capture and a tidy pipeline view no longer proves very much. The question worth asking a vendor now is what the platform does unattended, what evidence it leaves behind, and how quickly an administrator can change its mind.
How should a B2B company choose a CRM in 2026?
Choosing a CRM for a B2B business in 2026 works best as a short, evidence-led exercise rather than a long feature comparison. Start by writing down the three or four revenue processes that genuinely differentiate the business, quoting complex configurations, running a renewals motion, managing a distributor network. Score candidates on those, not on total feature count. Then test the AI claims directly, with your own data, on a real process, and ask what the platform logs when it acts. Finally, price the whole picture, licences plus implementation plus the internal capacity to run it. Analyst grids are a useful way to build the initial list of names, and a poor way to pick the winner from it.
The 2026 grid supports that approach nicely, because the spread of placements is genuinely informative this year. When five or six vendors sit in credible positions rather than two, a buying committee can afford to shortlist on fit rather than on reputation. That is a better conversation to be having, and it is one more organisations are now in a position to have.
The related question, which CRM is best for B2B companies in 2026, does not have a single answer and the grid rather usefully says so. Salesforce and Microsoft lead on completeness of vision and ability to execute across large, complex estates. HubSpot has become a serious option for mid-market B2B organisations that want speed to value. Creatio appeals to teams that want to compose their own processes. The best CRM is the one whose default way of working is closest to how the business already sells, because that is what determines adoption.
What HubSpot’s two-quadrant move means for a shortlist
HubSpot’s jump from Niche Player to Challenger is the most eye-catching movement on the 2026 grid, and it settles a question a lot of mid-market buying committees have been asking privately for a couple of years. The platform is no longer only credible for marketing-led teams with simple sales processes. Gartner’s own criteria for the new category, embedded AI plus governance and observability, are exactly the areas HubSpot has been shipping into, and the placement reflects that.
Deciding between HubSpot and Salesforce is usually a question about the shape of the business, not about which platform is stronger. Salesforce tends to win where the sales process is genuinely complex, where there are many integrations to a wider enterprise estate, and where a dedicated administration and development capability already exists. HubSpot tends to win where marketing and sales run as one motion, where the organisation wants to be productive in weeks rather than quarters, and where the internal team would rather configure than build. Both now sit in credible quadrants, so the decision can be made on operating model and total cost rather than on which one the market considers serious.
Governance and observability are criteria you can actually test
The most practical gift in this year’s grid is that Gartner has elevated two criteria that a buyer can verify without taking anyone’s word for it. Observability means you can see what an AI agent did, on which record, using which data, and why. Governance means you can constrain it before it acts, and change those constraints without a development cycle. Both are testable in a structured evaluation, which is a welcome change from scoring AI on the quality of a demonstration.
A useful test takes about two weeks and belongs in the pre-study phase of a CRM programme. A CRM pre-study is a short, structured assessment run before platform selection that maps current processes, data quality and integration points, then translates them into requirements a vendor can be scored against. In 2026 it should also include an agent trial: give each shortlisted platform a real, low-risk process, let its AI run it against a copy of your own data, and then read the audit trail. Teams that do this consistently report that the shortlist reorders itself, usually in favour of the platform that made the least impressive demonstration and the clearest log.
There is a happy side effect. Preparing data clean enough for that trial is work with independent value. Deduplicated accounts, consistent opportunity stages and a documented process improve routing, forecasting and reporting whatever platform eventually wins, so nothing spent on it is wasted if the decision goes another way. It is the same groundwork that turns a business from data-rich and insight-poor into one that can trust its own numbers, and it steadily reduces CRM technical debt whichever platform ends up carrying the process.
Why use an independent CRM partner to read an analyst grid?
An independent CRM partner is a consultancy that implements across several platforms and does not resell licences for any single vendor, so its recommendation follows the client’s situation rather than its own commercial incentives. On a document like the Magic Quadrant, that independence is worth something specific. A partner certified on one platform will naturally read the grid as confirmation of the platform it already sells. An independent partner can tell you which of the placements are relevant to a company of your size, in your industry, with your integration estate, and which are noise for your particular decision.
The grid measures vendors at a global scale across every segment they serve. Your decision is local, specific and constrained by an existing estate, a team, a budget and a timeline. Both are true at once, and the value of good advice sits in the translation between them. That is also why a strong placement should raise a vendor’s chance of making your shortlist and never decide it. The earlier piece on what most CRM selections get wrong goes further into how to structure that process.
The Sirocco perspective
We read this year’s grid as a straightforwardly good development for buyers. When a category is effectively a two-horse race, evaluations become political and the shortlist is written before the pre-study begins. A grid with two Leaders, four Challengers and a Visionary in genuinely credible positions gives a buying committee room to choose on fit, and gives us more to work with when we advise on selection.
We work across Salesforce, HubSpot and Microsoft Dynamics 365, and we implement on all three, so we have no stake in which name a client circles. What we do have is a strong view on method: build the shortlist from analyst coverage and peer evidence, then decide it with a pre-study and a hands-on agent trial against your own data. The vendors have made that easier this year by shipping the governance and observability features that make such a trial readable. Our advice is to use them. A CRM decision made on evidence you gathered yourself tends to hold up for a decade, and there has rarely been a better moment to gather it.
